Being a homemaker means your hands are constantly at work—cooking, cleaning, washing, organizing, and managing things from morning to night. In the middle of all this, our nails often get ignored. They become brittle, chipped, or dull. I used to think nail care was only for people who had time for salons or loved fancy nail art. But over time, I realized even simple nail care can make a big difference—and it doesn’t have to take much time.
What helped me most was starting with small changes. I began using kitchen gloves while washing dishes. Earlier, I never bothered. But once I started wearing them, I saw fewer breakages and my hands didn’t dry out as much. It made a huge difference and became a habit.
Another easy change was moisturizing. Our hands go through so much water, especially while doing chores. I now keep a small cream near the sink and apply it whenever I wash my hands. Even coconut oil works wonders if applied at night—it softens cuticles and strengthens nails with zero effort.
Keeping nails short and clean is another habit that helped. Long nails look pretty but are hard to maintain with daily chores. I now keep them trimmed and filed. They look neat, feel clean, and don’t break easily.
Earlier, I used to cut my cuticles thinking it made my hands look tidy, but it often led to redness and dryness. Now I simply push them back gently after a bath and apply a bit of oil. It’s a simple routine but makes my hands look more cared for.
I also realized the importance of giving my nails a break from polish. I love applying color, but sometimes I leave them bare for a few days to let them breathe. During that time, I soak them in warm water with lemon and a little oil. It leaves them clean and fresh naturally.
And yes, eating right matters too. I noticed my nails were getting stronger when I started eating soaked almonds, cashews, and a date daily. I also added more greens and a bit of ghee to my meals. These small food changes made my skin and nails healthier without any extra effort.
One more thing—I stopped using my nails to open packages or scratch things. It might seem minor, but this one change saved my nails from chipping and peeling so often.
Now I keep a small nail kit in my bedside drawer. Nothing fancy, just a nail cutter, file, and a small oil bottle. I use it once a week while watching TV or relaxing. It’s easy and keeps my nails in shape.
Taking care of your nails isn’t about being fancy. It’s about giving your hard-working hands a little love. Even if you don’t wear polish or go to salons, neat and healthy nails make you feel good about yourself. And you totally deserve that.
